The Latest From the Katie Couric/CBS Saga, and Who Should Replace Her on the Evening News?

By Alex Weprin

Politico’s Mike Allen writes about the latest in regards to “CBS Evening News” anchor Katie Couric:

CBS News soon will announce a transition from Katie Couric, who plans to launch a syndicated daytime talk show in the fall of 2012, according to industry sources. Scott Pelley is her most likely successor; another internal candidate is Harry Smith.

Allen adds that CBS is hopeful she will remain with the company and contribute to CBS News programs, and that it is possible she could leave before her contract expires June 4. She could also sign a brief extension.

Elsewhere, the AP’s David Bauder also writes that Couric is expected to leave the “Evening News” anchor chair, which, as a source notes, is not exactly news following weeks of stories about Couric’s future at CBS.

“This may set the record for most way to repackage the same thing as news,” an insider joked.

Update: The NY Times Magazine speaks to Couric, who confirms that she is talking to former NBCU CEO Jeff Zucker about a syndicated show.
