‘The Cycle’ ‘Geography Refresher’ Gets The Geography Wrong

By Alex Weprin

Another month, another geography-related error. This time, the culprit was Touré of MSNBC’s “The Cycle.

Unlike his colleagues at “Martin Bashir” last month or “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams in July, his error was not part of a graphic that appeared on-screen, but in the script. It was exacerbated however by the fact that Touré began the segment by calling it a”geography refresher,” in reference to the mall shooting in Nairobi, Kenya.

“Here is your Monday Geography refresher, Kenya is located on the northern coast of Africa, right next door to Somalia,” he said

Still, as CNN showed in 2011 and Katie Couric showed in 2008, simple geography errors have a way of going viral.
