Terri Stewart Named CBS News National Editor

By Alex Weprin

CBS News has named Terri Stewart as its new national editor. Stewart has been the northeast bureau chief for CBS, and has been with the company since 1986.

In her new role she will oversee day-to-day coverage for hard news and special events. She will effectively be replacing Bill Felling, who was named executive director of news services for CBS a few weeks back.

“Over the years she has held a number of key positions at the Broadcast Center, coordinating news coverage and often shedding light on stories and people with little visibility,” writes CBS News VP of news Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews in an email to staff obtained by TVNewser. “In addition to her journalistic credentials and her loyalty to CBS News, Terri is a confident leader in the newsroom and has the respect of her colleagues at CBS News.”

I am pleased to announce that Terri Stewart has been promoted to National Editor for CBS News.

Terri has been a committed and notable member of the CBS News team since 1986. Over the years she has held a number of key positions at the Broadcast Center, coordinating news coverage and often shedding light on stories and people with little visibility. In addition to her journalistic credentials and her loyalty to CBS News, Terri is a confident leader in the newsroom and has the respect of her colleagues at CBS News.

As National Editor Terri will work with all CBS News broadcasts and domestic bureaus, managing the day-to-day coverage for hard news and special events.

Most recently, she was the Northeast Bureau Chief, where she was responsible for news coverage from Maine to Delaware and the Midwest and for assigning correspondents, producers and crews in the region. Prior to that, she was the deputy bureau chief in the Northeast Bureau, where she managed the division’s coverage of events from the tragedy of TWA Flight 800 to the pure fun of Woodstock II.

Before her tenure in the Northeast Bureau, Terri worked at the political unit in 1988 and 1992, and at Newspath where she was named Senior Producer. During the 1988 presidential campaign she was a ‘kid on the bus’ following Richard Gephardt and other candidates in the days before cell phones and pagers. Always athletic, she was often first off the bus, dashing to the payphone to file her report.

As an Associate Producer at Newspath Terri coordinated feeds out of New York and traveled with Special Events for Space Shuttle launches, political conventions and breaking news.

She’s come a long way from her start at WCAU-TV in Philadelphia where she produced local talk shows, ripped scripts for the news broadcasts and finally made her way to assignment editor.

Please join me in congratulating Terri.
