Ted Turner: ‘Take the Million Dollars and Shove It’

By Mark Joyella

Accepting an Emmy Award for lifetime achievement Monday night, CNN founder Ted Turner talked about being one of broadcasting’s legends–even though, he says, “I got fired.”

As Wolf Blitzer shook his head in the audience, Turner said “I got phased out.” The management at Time Warner offered him a new, million-dollar contract, he said, to do nothing. “You can take the million dollars and shove it you know where,” Turner said.

After an emotional career highlight video that included tributes from NBC’s Tom Brokaw and former President Jimmy Carter, Turner said “I’ll probably live a few more years because of tonight.”
