Howard will oversee all editorial operations for the Sporting News, setting editorial direction, managing writers and editors and supervising production of Sporting News magazine, Sporting News Today, SportingNews.com and Sporting News Yearbooks and report to Sporting News President and Publisher, Jeff Price.
“We are incredibly excited to have such an accomplished and uniquely qualified journalist and editor as Garry Howard joining Sporting News at this critical time in our history,” Price said in a statement. “His experience positions him well to lead Sporting News into our 125th year and beyond. Also, with our strong commitment to diversity, we are extremely proud to be the first national sports magazine to bring an African-American on board at the top editorial position.”
Howard is the immediate past president of the Associated Press Sports Editors and served as the assistant managing editor/sports for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Howard was the last remaining African American editing the sports section of a mainstream daily newspaper.
“I am so excited to be a part of the Sporting News family,” said Howard. “I look forward to working with all the writers and editors to create a brand that is must-read for everyone on every platform available to readers.
