The Sporting News has hired veteran sports journalist Garry D. Howard as its editor-in-chief marking the first time an African American will lead the magazine’s editorial staff.

Howard will oversee all editorial operations for the Sporting News, setting editorial direction, managing writers and editors and supervising production of Sporting News magazine, Sporting News Today, SportingNews.com and Sporting News Yearbooks and report to Sporting News President and Publisher, Jeff Price.

“We are incredibly excited to have such an accomplished and uniquely qualified journalist and editor as Garry Howard joining Sporting News at this critical time in our history,” Price said in a statement. “His experience positions him well to lead Sporting News into our 125th year and beyond. Also, with our strong commitment to diversity, we are extremely proud to be the first national sports magazine to bring an African-American on board at the top editorial position.”
