‘Speaking For All White People’ Chris Matthews Apologizes to Black Colleagues

By Chris Ariens

On “Hardball” Thursday, Chris Matthews had a discussion about race in America with two of his colleagues: contributor Michael Steele, the former RNC chairman and Val Nicholas who is a VP of Creative Director at NBC News. Both men recounted stories from their youth, saying that the color of their skin made them targets of police. At the end of the segment, Matthews apologized on behalf of “all white people.”

“I’m speaking now for all white people, especially those who tried to change over the past 50 or 60 years, and a lot have really tried to change. And I’m sorry for this stuff. That’s all I’m saying.”
