Sean Penn Tells Charlie Rose His Rolling Stone El Chapo Article ‘Failed’

By Brian Flood

Actor and director Sean Penn sat down with CBS News’ Charlie Rose last night in Santa Monica, Calif., for his first interview since Rolling Stone published his controversial interview with then-fugitive Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. It was an interview Rose promised during CBS News’ TCA panel earlier this week.

Penn told Rose that the Rolling Stone article was a failure. “This is somebody– who– upon whose interview could I begin a conversation about the policy of the war on drugs,” Penn said. “My article failed.”

Penn’s discussion with Rose will air on 60 Minutes this Sunday and an excerpt was shown today on CBS This Morning.

El Chapo was captured after a shootout with Mexican authorities last week. They said Penn’s meeting with the drug kingpin helped lead to his capture. But Penn says that story is a “myth” and believes the accusation was meant to make him a potential target for Guzman’s drug cartel. When asked if he’s fearful for his life, Penn simply responded, “no.”
