Sam Champion: ‘I Grew Up Here. This Will Always Be My Home’

By Jordan Chariton

For viewers who hadn’t heard the news, Sam Champion announced his departure from “Good Morning America” for The Weather Channel this morning.

Speaking to his co-hosts, Champion spoke about the joy of working with friends and “family.”

“What happens on this set is incredibly real and natural…even my grumpy mornings,” he joked. “It’s what happens here before the show, that makes the show.”

He talked about his move as the “co-captain” of the “holy grail” of weather.

“What they’re doing right now is changing the way that we’ll all get our weather,” Champion continued. “To be able to join everybody, the very best in weather, and to try to do something that is changing the way America gets its weather…I had to try it.”

“GMA” sends Champion off tomorrow with a special tribute.
