“Safer Becomes ’60 Min.’ Senior Reporter”

Mike Wallace‘s imminent retirement as a regular ’60 Minutes’ contributor will leave” Morley Safer, “who joined the broadcast in 1970, as its senior correspondent,” the AP reports. “Safer is on half-time at ’60 Minutes,’ meaning he’s expected to produce fewer stories than in the past and he’s assigned fewer producers — two instead of four or five. Just like Wallace, who routinely churned out more stories than expected, Safer admits to having a tough time pulling back the reins.”

Safer has a lot to say in the story. David Bauder writes: “He grumbles about television’s ‘stupid’ obsession with seeking young viewers and responds to a question about the TV industry’s latest preoccupation — will Katie Couric jump to CBS to become evening news anchor? — by not even mentioning her name.”
