Ross Greenburg Not Fired From HBO Sports

By Marcus Vanderberg

BoxingScene.com reported Friday morning that longtime HBO executive Ross Greenburg had been fired by the network and his replacement was Yahoo executive vice president Ross Levinsohn.

Unfortunately for the boxing website, that report was simply not true. Both Levinsohn and HBO spokesman Ray Stallone denied the reports, which forced BoxingScene.com to release the following statement:

As I noted in an earlier statement, this week I was advised by two people who I consider to be reliable and knowledgeable that Ross Levinsohn would succeed Ross Greenburg as President of HBO Sports. On Friday morning, I communicated that information to Rick Reeno, who posted it on this website.

Thereafter, I learned that Yahoo (Mr. Levinsohn’s current employer) had issued a statement in his name and that other people with knowledge of the situation had told third parties that the information that I shared with BoxingScene.com is incorrect.

I have since gone online and read other statements from people who were told by Mr. Levinsohn that he is not leaving Yahoo. Denials from people within HBO have also been communicated to me.

I will accept these denials at face value and apologize to anyone (particularly Mr. Levinsohn) who might have been put in an embarrassing situation because of my comments.
