Rory McIlroy Tells BBC Commentator to Shut Up About Getting New Caddy

By Cam Martin

Rory McIlroy posted a 1-under par in the first round of the Irish Open, including a double-bogey on 18, prompting BBC golf commentator Jay Townsend to say on Twitter that McIlroy’s course management could benefit from a new caddy to replace JP Fitzgerald. His suggestion? Stevie Williams, Tiger Woods’ longtime bag man, who was recently fired. McIlroy was none too pleased, tweeting that Townsend should shut up, as he’s a failed golfer and his opinion means nothing. Ouch.

Townsend replied by saying he stands by his statement, and McIlroy replied by saying he stands by his caddy. Townsend replied to that by saying, “As you should, I respect that.”
