How big of a story was Hurricane Isaac? It was big enough that The Weather Channel placed second only to Fox News Channel in primetime on cable news Tuesday night. In total day, Weather was actually the number one cable news channel in the demo, and placed second to FNC in total viewers.

Weather averaged 1.82 million viewers in primetime Tuesday, including 843,000 in the key adults 25-54 demo. Weather brought in 500,000 more viewers than MSNBC, which led with convention coverage, and 600,000 more than CNN, which was split between the convention and the Hurricane. It was far behind FNC in total viewers, but relatively close in the demo, only 300,000 viewers behind.

In total day Weather averaged 1.23 million viewers, including 526,000 adults 25-54. Weather drew more than twice as many viewers as CNN or MSNBC, though it was a million viewers behind FNC. In the demo, Weather was the most-watched cable news channel.

The channel peaked at 9 PM ET, when it drew 1.84 million viewers, including 892,000 A-25-54.
