Ratings: Fox News Wins During Breaking News, Cooper Tops O’Reilly in Demo

By Merrill Knox

hemmerbldg2Fox News delivered the highest ratings in both total viewers and the A25-54 demographic during yesterday’s breaking news of the building explosion in East Harlem, delivering 1,310,000 total viewers and 297,000 demo viewers. CNN was second and MSNBC was third for the 10-11amET hour.

Both Fox News and CNN were up compared to the previous day: FNC was up +7% in total viewers and +42% in the A25-54 demo, while CNN was up +44% and +49%, respectively. MSNBC was down -5% in total viewers but up +17% in the demo.

The busy breaking news day propelled CNN to a rare primetime win in the 8pmET hour: “Anderson Cooper 360” topped “The O’Reilly Factor” by +63,000 viewers in the A25-54 demo last night. In total viewers, Bill O’Reilly’s program was still far out front, averaging 2,810,000 to Cooper’s 972,000. Cooper covered the Malaysia Airlines flight for most of the hour; as we noted earlier, CNN has ramped up coverage of the missing flight as the search continues into its sixth day.
