Q3 2014 Ratings: MSNBC Has Lowest Rated Quarter Since 2007

MSNBC just had its worst three month stretch in nearly 7 years. For Q3 2014, MSNBC is down double digits in total day and primetime viewership. Among total day, A25-54 demo viewers, MSNBC placed fourth, behind FNC, CNN and HLN. In primetime, among total viewers MSNBC was second behind Fox News and ahead of CNN and HLN.

The ratings for Q3, 2014 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 328,000 Total Viewers / 97,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 552,000 Total Viewers / 150,000 A25-54

Among total day and primetime viewers, MSNBC had its lowest rated quarter since Q4 2007 in total viewers and the lowest since Q2 2006 in the A25-54 demo. MSNBC is down -12% in viewers and down -25% in the demo for total day viewing. In primetime, the network shed -3% of total viewers while down -21% in the demo.

MSNBC’s three primetime shows, “All in with Chris Hayes,” “The Rachel Maddow Show,” and “Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell,” each had their lowest rated quarters ever in the demo.

NEW YORK – September 30, 2014 – MSNBC topped CNN in primetime total viewers (615,000 vs. CNN’s 531,000) for the month of September and 3Q (647,000 vs. CNN’s 578,000) according to data from Nielsen. 3.6 million viewers tuned-in throughout the course of MSNBC’s coverage of the Global Citizen Festival which aired on September 27 from 3-10 p.m. ET.

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” from 6-9 a.m. ET, “Hardball” with Chris Matthews at 7 p.m. ET, “The Rachel Maddow Show” at 9 p.m. ET and “The Last Word” with Lawrence O’Donnell at 10 p.m. ET all ranked #2 in total viewers for the month.

“Morning Joe” ranked #2 among total viewers for the month with 363,000 (vs. CNN’s 340,000). “Hardball” ranked #2 among total viewers for the month with 690,000 (vs. CNN’s 550,000) and 3Q with 693,000 (vs. CNN’s 567,000). “The Rachel Maddow Show” was #2 in total viewers with 783,000 total viewers (CNN had 529,000) and 3Q with 798,000 (vs. CNN’s 580,000). “The Last Word” ranked #2 among total viewers with 569,000 (vs. CNN’s 459,000) and 3Q 635,000 (vs. CNN’s 520,000).

MSNBC also ranked #1 in Weekend Sales Prime (M-Su 7p-2a) among A25-54 for the 17th straight month.

MSNBC continued as the most diverse cable news network. In weekday primetime (M-F 8p-11p), MSNBC ranked #1 in African-American audiences for total viewers for the month. MSNBC ranked #1 among African-American total viewers for the 56th consecutive month in M-Su Sales primetime.
