By Merrill Knox

fox news logoFox News finished its 50th straight quarter and 150th straight month as the top-rated cable news network in June. Despite the milestone, Fox News — like all the cable news networks — was down compared to the same quarter last year, delivering its lowest quarter in the primetime A25-54 demographic in 13 years.

The ratings for Q2 2014 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 1,588,000 total viewers / 265,000 A25-54
  • Total Day Mon-Sun): 940,000 total viewers / 189,000 A25-54

In total day, Fox News was down -20% in total viewers and -21% in the A25-54 demographic compared to Q2 2013; in primetime, the network was down -16% in both ratings measurements. It was FNC’s lowest-rated quarter in the primetime A25-54 demographic since Q2 2001, before 9/11.

All three primetime shows were down compared to Q2 2013. “The O’Reilly Factor” lost -17% in total viewers and -20% in A25-54 viewers, delivering the show’s lowest quarterly demo ratings since Q2 2001. “The Kelly File” was down -5% in total viewers and -15% in the demo compared to the 9pmET timeslot last year, while “Hannity” was down -18% and -16%, respectively, compared to the 10pmET timeslot last year.

“Fox & Friends” (6-9amET) and “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” (7pmET) delivered the lowest A25-54 audience in their timeslots since Q3 2001 and Q2 2001, respectively. Despite that, it was a milestone month for both shows: “F&F” and “OTR,” as well as “Your World with Neil Cavuto,” marked 50 straight quarters as the top-rated shows in their respective time slots (the consecutive quarters for Van Susteren’s show includes two different timeslots, 10pmET and 7pmET).
