Q2 2013 Ratings: Trial Coverage Boosts HLN

HLN topped MSNBC in Total Day for the first time since 2005 in the second quarter of 2013. With its coverage of the Jodi Arias and George Zimmerman trials, the network has surged double digits across the board compared to the same quarter last year.

The ratings for Q2 2013 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun): 518,000 Total Viewers / 178,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 390,000 Total Viewers / 141,000 A25-54

Compared to the second quarter of 2012, HLN was up +61% in Total Viewers and +48% in the A25-54 demographic in Total Day and +49% and +51%, respectively, in primetime. It should be noted that HLN struggled during the second quarter of 2012.

HLN’s daytime programming (9am-5pm) is up +165% in Total Viewers and +109% in A25-54 viewers compared to the year-ago quarter. In primetime, Nancy Grace’s program is up +50% in Total Viewers and +46% in the demo, while Dr. Drew Pinsky’s program is up +112% in both ratings measurements. The 10 p.m. hour, which has been home to “After Dark” this quarter, is up +70% and +76%, respectively.

For the first time since 2005, HLN topped MSNBC in total day among both P2+ and P25-54 viewers for a quarter, posting impressive gains vs. year-ago. HLN had a 9% advantage over MSNBC among total viewers in total day (393k vs. 361k) and a 15% advantage in P25-54 (142k vs. 123k). June marks the fourth consecutive month HLN has topped MSNBC in total day demo.

In Q2, HLN continued its momentum with double-digit gains in total day and primetime.

HLN transitioned seamlessly from the trial coverage of Jodi Arias, which posted some of the network’s best ratings in recent history, to the continuing coverage of the trial of George Zimmerman. During the first week of testimony, the network increased 85% in total day over the prior four week average (492k vs. 266k) among total viewers and 83% among P25-54 (181k vs. 99k).

6p Evening Express is up 180% in P2+ (599k vs. 214k) and up 197% among 25-54 viewers (187k vs. 63k).
7p Jane Velez-Mitchell is up 107% in P2+ (622k vs. 301k) and up 112% among 25-54 viewers (206k vs. 97k).
8p Nancy Grace is up 50% in P2+ (656k vs. 438k) and up 46% among 25-54 viewers (223k vs. 153k).
9p Dr. Drew On Call/HLN Mysteries is up 112% in P2+ (598k vs. 282k) and up 112% among 25-54 viewers (201k vs. 95k).
10p HLN After Dark/HLN Mysteries is up 70% in P2+ (462k vs. 271k) and up 76% among 25-54 viewers (171k vs. 97k).

In Q2 2013, the site posted gains in all key metrics over Q2 2012:

– 172 mm total page views (up 350%)
– 16 mm total video starts (up 327%)
– 6 mm average monthly unique visitors (up 29%)
