Piers Morgan Breaks Silence on Hacking Scandal

By Alex Weprin

CNN’s Piers Morgan finally broke his silence on the News Corp. hacking scandal on his program last night. The subject had been covered extensively on nearly all of CNN’s other shows, though many of Morgan’s programs over the last few weeks had been taped due to his obligations for “America’s Got Talent.”

As Morgan explained during the open of the show, he has extensive knowledge of the world of British tabloids:

“It is a world I know very well. I was editor of two major tabloid newspapers for 11 years, I worked for News Corp. as editor of News of the World 16 years ago from 1994-1995. I was also editor of The Daily Mirror, not owned by Rupert Murdoch, from 1995-2004. For the record, I do not believe that any story we published in either title was gained in an unlawful manner. Nor have I ever seen to suggest that.”

Morgan then discussed the future of the Murdoch media empire with The New Yorker‘s Ken Auletta:
