“Philosophical Shift” For CBS News

By Brian

“This is an important day in the history of CBS News,” Andrew Heyward declared at this morning’s announcement. “What we’re really announcing today is an expansion of our commitment to news on the Internet.”

He said: “Internet news, I think, is well done now, but there’s not a ton of original reporting there. We have the luxury of being able to devote tremendous journalistic resources to the Internet in addition to our broadcasts. This represents really a philosophical shift for CBS News.”

> During the day, people “aren’t interested in a linear product,” Heyward said. “We will be live when it’s worth it, but always there when you want it.”

> Heyward said he meant “no disrespect to cable news…but it’s really a different medium.”

> “We have the opportunity…to create a whole new genre of journalism, broadband journalism, that I think will take its place…alongside other forms of delivery of news in a very exciting and compelling way.”
