Phil Simms Sorry About Incident With Desmond Howard

By Marcus Vanderberg

Phil Simms joined Chris Russo on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio on Monday and the CBS commentator discussed his altercation with Desmond Howard at the NFL Experience in Dallas.

Chris Russo: “Let me just ask you this on this whole thing with Desmond Howard. Everybody is paying attention to it. It sounds like he made a big deal about some sort of physical altercation; it was an argument but no chance of a physical altercation. What was going on with this thing on Saturday at this NFL Experience thing?”

Phil Simms: “Well, not really going to say anything about it except, um, you know, I don’t know what to say.”

Russo: “Are you annoyed at Howard making this public?”

Simms: “Well, of course I am. But it is what it is. It’s a great lesson learned and of course I’m not excusing myself. You know, I’ve got to know better. It’s a newday and age. I talked about it the week before, or whatever, the week after the championship games with Jay Cutler, so it’s kind of the same situation. And, you know, you’ve got to know that I think about those things all the time. It’s just not good on my part, either. I understand that.”

Russo: “I’ll put it this way. And I’ll try to ask this gently and I know you’ll give me a solid answer because you and I have known each other a long time. And you have not always been happy with me either.”

Simms: “That’s alright. I can’t tell the whole story and my feelings about the whole thing just because I’m not. I’m not going to drag it on.”

Russo: “But I’ll say this: You can knock me all you want, ‘Russo’s a lousy talk show host, he stinks, he’s loud, he’s condescending, he’s this, he’s that, I can’t take him, he thinks he knows it all, Giant baseball who cares, loves the old time stuff, boy am I bored’. You can do that until the cows come home and I can handle that and you’re the same way because you can knock you, you have no problem with it. But if you knock my kid or said something I didn’t like, you know, ‘Timmy can’t make this play, Chris, he stinks, he’s shooting too much, he’s doing this, he’s doing that’. I’ll go crazy. And I think any father, in your case you’ve got kids playing all these great sports. I mean, it’s a tough spot. It sounds like Howard did that and you wanted to ask him about it. Is that basically what happened?”

Simms: “Well, yeah, its, you know, again I’m not going to go into it but it’s much bigger than that. So that’s just my take on it. It’s just, I don’t know. It’s what I believe and just sports reporting and I’ll just leave it at that.”

Russo: “You think it’s gotten nasty is what it comes down to?”

Simms: “Well, I’m not even going to say that. Look, it’s over. I’m going to let it go. The best thing I can just tell you is that we all survived, that’s the good thing. And like I said, I learned my lesson and it’s just, you’ve got to always be, just got to be smart at all times. You know how it is in life for everybody now. You can never let down for one second.”

Russo: “You’re right, you have a bad moment, somebody’s going to find out about it, that’s all there is to it.”

Simms: “Yeah, that’s right. And I can go into a room with you and I and we say things privately but it doesn’t mean it’s private. So it is what it is and, again, like I said it’s over. And, you know, and I’m sorry. I really, I mean this, I’m sorry it happened. I really am because even if it remained private, there’s still nothing gained. So I’ve learned another lesson.”
