PGA Tour Players Are Finally Embracing Twitter

The PGA Tour is finally entering the 21st century when it comes to social media.

Larry Dorman of The New York Times has an excellent article on how Twitter is a growing presence on the PGA Tour.

“An earlier sign came when Jack Nicklaus, ever the trend-setter, sent his best wishes via Twitter for his longtime rival Tom Watson a couple of years ago when Watson, then 59, was attempting to win the 2009 British Open at Turnberry.

The message from Nicklaus, then 69: “Barbara and I are tickled pink with his success. Nothing would please me more than to see the old boy win.”

Watson failed, gallantly, losing in a playoff to Stewart Cink, who, as it happens, was an early adopter of Twitter. Cink has become golf’s titan of tweets, with more than 1.2 million followers, about 100,000 more than the Englishman Ian Poulter.

According to numbers compiled by the PGA Tour, 111 pros who are tour members or former members are part of the universe of 175 million registered Twitter users, who generate 95 million messages a day. In one study ranking athletes according to Twitter followers, Cink and Poulter were in the top 20.”

Earlier this week, the PGA Tour announced it was lifting its ban of cellphones and other communication devices at events.

How soon before we get a player tweeting during a round of golf?
