Old Ball Players Don't Fade Away, They Just Complain on Yahoo Podcasts

David Wells had a colorful career in Major League Baseball. He was drunk. He was perfect, until he wasn’t. He was not quiet.

He’s loud in retirement as well. The Yankee great blasted former manager Joe Torre in a podcast, calling him a “coward.”

“I don’t like him at all,” he said. “As a manager, I think he’s terrible. He wasn’t a fair manager. He didn’t treat people the same. He definitely didn’t treat me the same. […] If he tells you anything else, he’s a liar.”

The feud between the player and the manager has deep roots. Torre criticized Wells and other teammates in his book, The Yankee Years, which prompted a response from the pitcher. Clearly, he can’t let it go.

But Torre is no angel either.Earlier this week, he apologized to New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel after expressing interest in his job. The baseballerati thought it was a classless move, probably because it was.

The Mets man took the high road, saying “Joe, I’ve always known as a class person. So I have no problem with it. I’m trying to win games.”

Both Torre and Wells would be better served to just be quiet. Then again, we’d love to hear Wells’ thought about current Yankees manager Joe Girardi’s choice to leave Javier Vasquez in Thursday night’s game after he hit three batters in a row.
