‘Notorious RBG’: MSNBC’s Exclusive with Justice Ginsburg

By Mark Joyella

You’ll be seeing the hashtag #NotoriousRBG a lot over the next few days. MSNBC confirmed tonight Irin Carmon has landed an interview with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, set to air Monday on “The Rachel Maddow Show.” Carmon, along with “Notorious RBG” blog creator Shana Knizhnik, are writing a biography of the justiceNotorious R.B.G.: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

MSNBC says Monday’s interview will focus on “how Justice Ginsburg has been an inspiration to young feminists, along with news of the day,” and the interview will be promoted, unsurprisingly, with the #NotoriousRBG hashtag on the network’s social channels. Ginsburg has confirmed she enjoys posts on the #NotoriousRBG Tumblr, and has given out t-shirts with the nickname as gifts.

In a 2014 interview, Justice Elena Kagan explained Ginsburg’s unique appeal. “It makes absolute sense that Justice Ginsburg has become an idol for younger generations,” said Kagan. “As a litigator and then as a judge, she changed the face of American anti-discrimination law. More than any other person, she can take credit for making the laws of this country work for women, and in doing so she made possible my own career.”

In an interview Wednesday with Bloomberg, Justice Ginsburg expressed her belief that America is ready for marriage equality. “The change in people’s attitudes on that issue has been enormous,” Ginsburg said.
