Nothing Personal: GMA Exec Explains Sawyer/Holmes Interview

By Chris Ariens

The NYPost writes about Diane Sawyer‘s less than in-depth interview with Katie Holmes on Monday’s GMA. As the Post puts it, the interview left out “claims that her baby, Suri, was created with the sperm of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, not hubby Tom Cruise.”

The omission of anything personal even had GMA’s Senior EP explaining what happened: “It was one of those bad calls on my part,” Jim Murphy told the Post. “Diane doesn’t generally get angry, but was she disappointed in how I handled it, yes.”

Murphy planned for the segment to delve into their personal lives but, the Post writes, “after nearly eight minutes of light banter, [Murphy] didn’t know when Sawyer was going to get to it and called for the segment to end.”

While the interview may have gotten personal, Murphy said it would not have gone into the new Andrew Morton book “because it has been widely criticized over the quality of its journalism.”

More: ABC may not be touching Morton’s book because of the “quality of its journalism.” But NBC’s Today Show this morning had Morton on for three live segments to talk about the book and answer emailed questions, in the 7, 8 and 9amET hour.
