‘Nightly News’ Wins Murrow For Storm Report, After Turning Gaze From Royal Wedding

By Chris Ariens

As we mentioned earlier, “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” won the 2012 Edward R. Murrow award for Video Newscast. The broadcast “Nightly” is being honored for is from Friday, April 29, 2011, the night of the royal wedding.

As we reported at the time, Williams had flown to London only to almost immediately return to the U.S. and then on to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to report on a series of deadly tornadoes across the south.

“Flying back from London was the least of the effort, and way too much was made of it at the time,” Williams tells TVNewser. “The real heroics took place in the field. We moved an army to Alabama and we showed Americans what had happened to their fellow citizens. We will never forget what we saw there. As they say at awards shows: this belongs to everyone in the organization.”
