Nightly News’ Immigrant Nation

By Chris Ariens

This week on Nightly News, Maria Menounos (third from right) is fronting a series called “We the People.” It’s about first and second generation Americans sharing their unique perspectives on being a child of immigrants. The series stems from Menounos’ experience being born to parents who emigrated from Greece.

Turns out the “We The People” brainstorming session included nearly a dozen members of the “Nightly News” staff who also fit that category. Senior Producer ML Flynn (second from left) has Irish roots; producer Joo Lee was born in South Korea but moved to the states as a child; producer Bita Nikravesh is Iranian; producer Marisa Buchanan has Italian roots;
AP Christina Vallice’s parents are from India; AP Amber Payne’s mother is from Jamaica; and the Nightly interns are of Dominican, Korean and Indian heritage.

Maybe they should call the broadcast World News. Oh wait, that’s taken.
