‘Nightline’ #1 in Late Night as 2011-12 Season Begins

By Chris Ariens

Despite former anchor Ted Koppel’s objections to the program, “Nightline” continues to be the #1 show in late night. For the first time in 18 years the ABC News program came in first in Total Viewers and the two younger demos for the premiere week.

“Nightline” is up from its year-ago premiere week performance in Total Viewers (+7%) and A25-54 viewers (+2%). NBC’s “The Tonight Show” and CBS’ “The Late Show” are both down: Leno is down -4% in Total Viewers and down -10% in A25-54 viewers while Letterman is down -15% and down -17%, respectively.

ABC’s ratings are based on a 25-minute broadcast, while CBS and NBC are based on approximately :50 minutes (prior to the final national commercial break of each program).
