‘Nightcrawler’ Explores Strange World of Overnight TV News Stringers

By Brian Flood

In theaters today, another movie about the TV News business. In “Nightcrawler,” Jake Gyllenhaal plays a morally-challenged, on the verge of psychotic, overnight TV news stringer and Rene Russo plays a hard-charging “if it bleeds it leads” TV news manager.

Critics are loving it. So are some TV news anchors, including Fox News’s Steve Doocy. “I got to go to a special screening,” Doocy said yesterday on “Fox & Friends.” “I talked to [Gyllenhaal] about it because he has all of these little psychotic things in it. And he said to this day he’ll remember one of them and recite it to himself.”
