Networks Offer Special Reports As President Comments On Possible Government Shutdown

By Alex Weprin

President Obama gave a brief statement this afternoon as the threat of a government shutdown loomed over Washington. The President began by listing off what agencies would continue to operate and which would not.

“I think it is important for everyone to understand that the federal government is the country’s largest employer,” Obama said. “A shutdown will have a very real economic impact on real people, right away.

“Past shutdowns have disrupted the economy significantly, it would throw a wrench in the gears of the economy, just as those gears get traction,” he added. “All of this is entirely preventable if the House chooses to do what the Senate has already done.”
