Networks, Cablers Rush to Cover Egypt Clashes

There is chaos in Egypt, as protesters are facing off against the police in a number of major cities, including Cairo and Alexandria. Egyptian President Mubarak has instituted a nationwide curfew, but it does not appear to be working.

The broadcast news divisions, as well as all three cable networks are covering the situation, with plans to continue coverage through the weekend.

CNN, CNNI and CNN en Espanol has five teams in the country, including correspondents Ben Wedeman, Nic Robertson and Frederik Pleitgen, with Ivan Watson expected to arrive soon. The networks will continue ti cover Egypt through the weekend.

Fox News will have two correspondents and crews in the country this weekend. Greg Palkot is already there, with Dominic Di-Natale expected to join them in-country shortly.

CBS News has Elizabeth Palmer in Egypt, with reports filed as-needed for the network’s programs this weekend.

NBC News has Richard Engel in Egypt, with ITV’s John Ray contributing to NBC’s coverage. Engel has contributed to most NBC News programs, as well as MSNBC, and will continue his coverage through the weekend. NBC News has a bureau in Cairo.

Al Jazeera English has been leading the coverage, with some of the American networks even going to their video feed for short periods of time. The NY Times profiles the network, which is not widely available in The U.S.
