A few thoughts on NBC’s acquisition of the Weather Channel.
• What becomes of NBC Weather Plus? There is no mention of NBC’s digital weather channel in today’s press release. The channel, which was launched in 2004, has its offices at the CNBC complex in Englewood Cliffs as well as some staff at 30 Rock who provide weather reports for MSNBC and NBC Nightly News.
• What becomes of the Weather Plus brand at NBC stations? The Weather Plus branding is incorporated into all of the NBC O&O’s as well as dozens of affiliates. Their website boasts “a network of over 1,000 local reporters and meteorologists in more than 200 markets.”
• What becomes of The Weather Channel branding at non-NBC entities? WCBS in New York as an agreement with the network and pitches its forecasts as coming from “CBS2 and The Weather Channel.”
