The Society of Professional Journalists announced the annual Sigma Delta Chi award winners for newspapers, magazines, TV and radio.
“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” takes home the big prize for breaking news coverage for their coverage of the Chilean miner rescue.
And CBS’ Scott Pelley will have two more awards to add to his “Evening News” office when he moves in later this month. Two of his stories for “60 Minutes” won awards: this one for Investigative Reporting and and this one for Feature Reporting.
CNBC also won an award for Public Service for this anti-obesity campaign.

“NBC NIGHTLY NEWS WITH BRIAN WILLIAMS” WINS SIGMA DELTA CHI AWARD FOR BREAKING NEWS COVERAGE OF CHILEAN MINE RESCUE
NEW YORK, NY – May 10 – “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” has been awarded the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2010 Sigma Delta Chi Award for Breaking News Coverage for its reporting on the Chilean mine rescue, October 12-14, 2010. This award recognizes resourceful and complete coverage of a major breaking news event, emphasizing both deadline reporting and continuing coverage as the story develops over succeeding days.
The rescue of all 33 miners trapped in a Chilean coal mine for 69 days was a memorable celebration of teamwork and perseverance that captured the world’s attention. The NBC network’s attention to this story was supported by an elaborate and unique uplink infrastructure and an editorial commitment that enabled “NBC Nightly News” to take the lead in U.S. network coverage.
NBC News correspondents Kerry Sanders, Natalie Morales, and Mike Taibbi each contributed expert and passionate reporting on the story. Malinda Adams, Maria Alcon, Erika Angulo, Chip Bell, Mario Garcia, A.J. Goodwin, Joo Lee, and Olivia Santini were the producers. Andrew Franklin and Mike Mosher were the senior producers. Aurelia Grayson was the senior broadcast producer. Bob Epstein is the executive producer of “NBC Nightly News.”
The Sigma Delta Chi Awards date back to 1932, when the Society first honored six individuals for contributions to journalism. The current program began in 1939, when the organization awarded the first Distinguished Service Awards. These awards, which later became the Sigma Delta Chi Awards, recognize the best in professional journalism in categories covering print, radio, television, newsletters, art/graphics, online and research.

“60 MINUTES” WINS TWO SIGMA DELTA CHI AWARDS, BOTH FOR SCOTT PELLEY STORIES
America’s number-one news program has one two more awards. The Society of Professional Journalists announced today that 60 MINUTES stories reported by Scott Pelley are the winners of two Sigma Delta Chi honors.
For Pelley, recently named the new anchor of the CBS EVENING NEWS, it is his fourth story to win a prestigious award since the year began.
“21 Century Snake Oil,” a comprehensive look at the cottage industry of unproven medical treatments capitalizing on stem cell research news, won in the investigative category. Senior producer is Michael Radutzky; it was produced by David Gelber and Sam Hornblower and edited by Robert J. Shattuck. Associate producer is Reuben Heyman-Kantor.
“The All American Canal,” a report on a deep canal on the California-Mexico border where hundreds of illegal immigrants have drowned trying to cross into the U.S., won its prize in the feature reporting category. It was produced by Shawn Efran and edited by Terry Manning. Associate producer is Catherin Herrick.
In addition to these Sigma Delta Chi awards, since January, stories by Pelley and his team have been recognized with a DuPont-Columbia University award, and an Overseas Press Club Award.
