NBC News, ITV to Share Foreign Correspondents

By Alex Weprin

NBC News and UK broadcaster ITV News will share correspondents and resources in Africa and the Middle East, according to the British trade journal PressGazette.

Under the agreement, Rohit Kachroo (right) will become Africa correspondent for both organizations, based in Johannesburg. Elsewhere, ITV Middle East correspondent John Ray will also report from that region for NBC News. Ray will be supported by NBC News’ production team in Israel.

The deal will allow for the news organizations to have personnel and resources in parts of the world that are tricky to report from. And with so much cutting back among foreign bureaus by all news organizations, it is refreshing to see new foreign correspondents being added to news divisions… even if they are being shared with another network.

“We’re expanding our foreign operations at a time when many news organisations are retracting theirs, and we’re proud to do so hand-in-hand with America’s market leader,” said Jonathan Munro, deputy editor of ITV News.

“In a world of cultural and political interdependency, it is vital that we deliver to our audience first-hand reporting from wherever news happens,” said Chris Hampson, NBC’s international news director. “This partnership with award-winning ITV News expands our depth and reach into cultures, governments and events in parts of the world that are of critical importance to our viewers.”
