NBC???: Koppel Says Cost-Cutting Will Hurt The Product; Capus Disagrees

NBC News president Steve Capus held a town hall meeting with employees Friday morning. He said he was disappointed by Ted Koppel‘s comments in the Los Angeles Times today.

Referring to the cuts at NBC, the former ABCer said: “It always breaks my heart, because as much as they will make it sound as though the product is going to be as good as it ever was — no, it won’t.”

Koppel expressed worry about a further decline in foreign news coverage. “It worries me that in their effort to be economically competitive, they’re giving up this responsibility,” he said.

Capus pointed to the recent opening of new bureaus (“in Beijing, Beirut and Bangkok,” the Times noted).
