Mubarak NOT Resigning, Cablers Cover Egyptian Presidential Speech Live

By Alex Weprin

Earlier today it appeared that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak would resign. Nearly every U.S. media organization reported Mubarak would step aside, citing sources.

In a televised speech from the Presidential palace in Cairo around 10:45 PM local time (3:45 ET), Mubarak said that he still intends to step aside in September, while also tweaking the Constitution to make elections more transparent, and passing on many of his duties to Vice President Suleiman.

All three cable news channels carried the speech, and here in New York the Fox broadcast channel also carried a special report. CBS News also carried a special report.
