Photographer Matt Black was honored with the W. Eugene Smith Grant for Humanistic Photography at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. Black received the award, which is worth $30,000, for his work on MSNBC’s Geography of Poverty series.

MSNBC’s Geography of Poverty series examines forgotten America through Black’s photos and reports from MSNBC national reporter Trymaine Lee.

“We’re always looking for compelling, emotional stories that have been overlooked or ignored. And there isn’t a bigger story that is as hard to tell as the story of deep-seated inequality and poverty in the United States,” ep and executive editor of MSNBC.com Richard Wolffe told TVNewser when the series launched in June.
