MSNBC Schedules Primetime ‘Advancing The Dream’ Event

MSNBC will air a two-hour primetime special “Advancing the Dream: Live from The Apollo,” on Friday, September 6. As the name suggests, the special will air live from the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York, and will be hosted by “PoliticsNation” host Al Sharpton.

Guests will include Stevie Wonder, Magic Johnson (who has a movie theater across the street), Condoleezza Rice, Tyler Perry and Cathy Hughes. “Reverend Sharpton and his guests will look back at the struggles of the past, celebrate their current achievements and look forward to the challenges ahead,” per MSNBC. There will also be a red-carpet pre-show on tv.MSNBC.com starting at 7 PM.

The controversial for-profit University of Phoenix is sponsoring the event.

NEW YORK – August 26, 2013 – Reverend Al Sharpton and MSNBC will present “Advancing the Dream: Live from The Apollo” on Friday, September 6 at 8PM ET. The live star-studded two hour television event will include interviews and discussions with a diverse group of successful individuals including Stevie Wonder, Magic Johnson, Condoleezza Rice, Tyler Perry and Cathy Hughes.

Set at the iconic Apollo Theater, Reverend Sharpton and his guests will look back at the struggles of the past, celebrate their current achievements and look forward to the challenges ahead. These individuals ranging from political and business community leaders to performers and athletes will reflect on topics including education, worker’s rights, income inequality, the opportunity gap and other aspects of the modern day civil rights movement. The event is sponsored by the University of Phoenix.

Beginning at 7PM ET, MSNBC will live stream exclusive backstage interviews with celebrities and guests on the website (tv.msnbc.com). Through these interviews and a social media integration, viewers will have a chance to take part in the event from anywhere.

‘Advancing the Dream’ is an initiative led by Reverend Al Sharpton to highlight efforts in communities across America to expand fairness, equality and opportunity. The initiative was launched at the Essence Festival, will continue in Washington DC for the anniversary of the March on August 23 and concludes at the Apollo.
