Miles O’Brien to Share Story of Accident That Changed His Life

By Mark Joyella

It seemed, at first, to be the most ordinary of accidents. While on a reporting trip to the Philippines, longtime CNN correspondent Miles O’Brien was stacking camera gear, when one of the boxes shifted and fell on his arm. It hurt, and it left a big bruise, but that seemed to be the extent of it. Within two days, O’Brien had lost part of the arm–amputated above the elbow–and his life was forever changed. “This has got to be a nightmare,” O’Brien says in a new CNN special. “This can’t be real.”

Telling the story to CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, O’Brien recounts his struggle to adjust, and to recover. “Dr. Sanjay Gupta Reports: A Life Lost & Found” includes video of O’Brien in physical therapy, and learning to ride his bike again, without his arm.
