Megyn Kelly launches her new two-hour program on Fox News this afternoon, “America Live.” The NY Times’ Brian Stelter spoke to Kelly as well as Fox’s Senior VP of news editorial Michael Clemente about her start at the network, her new program, and her future:
When she was invited to substitute as an anchor for the first time, she recalls that the Fox News chief Roger Ailes, known as a talent spotter, said to her, “The only way you can disappoint me is if you try to hit a home run instead of a single.” Fox viewers noticed Ms. Kelly almost immediately.
Mr. Ailes repeated the advice after she was promoted to the afternoon shift. She interprets the comment to mean “just do a solid newscast.”
AdvertisementMr. Clemente dismissed talk of a prime-time position in Ms. Kelly’s future, saying, “Let’s see how these two hours go.”
Stelter reports that executives moved her to the spot to spread her and Bill Hemmer across more hours of the day. Both are viewed “as rising stars” and had been paired up on “America’s Newsroom.”
“Although I will miss starting my mornings with Bill,” Kelly said in a release, “I’m thrilled to embark on this new opportunity and look forward to delivering the news during what is shaping up to be one of the most historic news periods of our time.”
