MediaBuzz vs. Reliable Sources: The Ratings

By Chris Ariens

As we’ve been tracking on a daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly basis, cable news viewing has exploded over the last 6 months.

Much of that growth is due the polarizing presidency of Donald Trump and other divisions in D.C. The media itself has been a major part of the story too, which has led to plenty of media-on-media coverage (we’re looking at you Hannity). But as for the two cable news programs charged with monitoring the media, how are they doing in the ratings?

FNC’s MediaBuzz with Howard Kurtz remains the No. 1 media criticism show, which makes CNN’s Reliable Sources with Brian Stelter No. 2. The two shows air head-to-head at 11 a.m. ET on Sundays. MSNBC airs AM Joy with Joy Reid at 11 a.m. Sundays.

While Kurtz has been a dominant No. 1 among total viewers, all three shows are closer in the advertiser-friendly A25-54 demo.

Here’s how the shows stack up over the last couple of months:

  • Sundays 11 a.m. ET from May 28 – July 16, 2017:

Program – Total Viewers / A25-54 demo
FNC’s MediaBuzz – 1.298M / 287,000
CNN’s Reliable Sources – 860,000 / 257,000
MSNBC’s AM Joy – 855,000 / 217,000
