May 2015 Ratings: MSNBC Down Double Digits

By Chris Ariens

MSNBC continues to struggle in the ratings, with few bright spots in the month of May. This was the network’s least-watched month since Dec. 2007, among total viewers. Its No. 1 program, The Rachel Maddow Show, had its second-lowest rated month ever in total viewers. Still, Maddow topped CNN’s 9pm show among total viewers for the 24th straight month. Hardball also beat CNN for the 24th consecutive month in total viewers and Morning Joe topped CNN’s New Day among total viewers for the third month in a row.

The ratings for May 2015 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):

  • Primetime (Mon-Sun):463,000 total viewers / 125,000 A25-54
  • Total Day Mon-Sun): 299,000 total viewers / 83,000 A25-54

MSNBC was down -14 percent among total viewers for both total day and prime time. In adults 25-54, which is the preferred demographic for advertisers, MSNBC is down by an ever greater percentage vs. May 2014: down -18 percent in total day and down -19 percent in prime time.
