Matthew Dowd, who has been a political contributor to ABC News for more than five years, is taking on new duties at the network. ABC News president Ben Sherwood has named Dowd as his senior strategic adviser. Dowd will also increase his on-air role as a special correspondent.
In a note to staff about his expanded on-air role, Sherwood writes, “Matthew will go beyond political news to explore uniquely American cultural, economic and spiritual trends.”
Dowd was the chief strategist for the Bush-Cheney ’04 presidential campaign and joined ABC News in December 2007.
“Matthew’s strategic and tactical insights will be helpful to all of us as we look to expand our reach and impact across all of our business,” writes Sherwood.
Dowd continues as a political analyst for Bloomberg.
