Mark Preston has been named Executive Editor for CNN Politics, SVP and Washington Bureau Chief Sam Feist announced today.
In his new role, Preston will oversee CNN’s political events, including presidential debates. Preston will continue his political reporting, covering campaigns and events across CNN’s platforms, while also serving as an on-air analyst during election and primary coverage.
“Mark’s new role will put CNN in a terrific position heading into the mid-term elections and beyond,” Feist said. “Mark’s relationships in the political world are among the strongest in journalism and we look forward to Mark leveraging these connections as he organizes events and reports on the upcoming campaign.”
Before the promotion, Preston had been CNN’s political director since 2011. He’s been with the network since 2005.

Mark Preston has been named Executive Editor, CNN Politics, it was announced today by Sam Feist, CNN senior vice president and Washington bureau chief. In this role, Preston will take a lead in the conception and execution of the network’s political events, including debates. Preston will continue to serve as a political reporter covering campaigns, polling and political events across CNN platforms, including CNN, CNN International and CNN.com. He will also serve as the on-air analyst for CNN’s decision desk in the network’s upcoming election and primary coverage.

Prestonhas served as CNN’s political director since 2011, overseeing the network’s political coverage across all platforms. Preston joined CNN as political editor in 2005 and has been central to CNN’s coverage of every political event since, including CNN’s Emmy award-winning election nights in 2006 and 2012 as well as CNN’s Peabody award-winning campaign coverage in 2008. Prior to joining CNN, Preston was a senior staff writer for the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call, where he worked for six years.
His career also includes correspondent roles at States News Service, a wire service in Washington, and at the Marietta Daily Journal in Marietta, Ga., where he won several Georgia Press Association and Georgia Associated Press reporting awards.
