Marco Rubio: ‘I’m Just Glad the Water Was Nearby’

By Chris Ariens

Unfortunately for him, and the GOP, the most talked-about moment from Sen. Marco Rubio’s Republican response to the State of the Union address last night was his thirst.

Rubio paused mid-speech and reached off-camera for a small water bottle, took a swig, a gave a gulp heard ’round America.

“I needed water, what am I going to do?” said Rubio on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “I’m just glad the water was nearby,” he told “CBS This Morning.” Rubio told “Fox & Friends” he had a plan, all along: “I figured I would be better off taking the water and taking the hit for it than being unable to pronounce my words.”

2012 GOP VP nominee Rep. Paul Ryan, who gave the Republican response last year, went on “CBS This Morning” and had some advice for Rubio, and whoever does the speech next year: “My secret is, you put a cough drop in your mouth.”
