Looking Out For You?: A Factor Ambush Examination

By SteveK

The New York Times’ Brian Stelter writes about the famous (or infamous) O’Reilly Factor ambushes and the “more than 50 people that Mr. O’Reilly’s young producers have confronted in the past three years.”

Stelter spoke to a few of those ambushees, including Mike Hoyt, executive editor of The Columbia Journalism Review. “They weren’t interested in my views,” said of his January run-in. “They just wanted to have me looking surprised or irked or whatever.”

David Tabacoff, the Factor’s senior EP, disagreed with that characterization. He said the interviews are “part of the journalistic mission” of the show.

“We’re trying to get answers from people,” he said. “Sometimes the only way to get them is via these methods.”

• Stelter tweets this today: “O’Reilly’s ambush producers wouldn’t talk. I tried asking thru PR people; tried Facebook; tried phone calls. But didn’t visit their homes.”
