Libya, Earthquake Propel MSNBC.com’s BreakingNews

By Alex Weprin

Breaking news out of Libya and an unexpected earthquake on the east coast proved to be a boon for BreakingNews.com. the website and social media feeds operated by MSNBC.com.

Immediately following the quake, BreakingNews.com reached a new record for simultaneous visits. The site saw so much traffic that they had to add more hosting servers to keep up. The site, while associated with MSNBC and NBC News, retweets and links to a wide variety of sources.  Cory Bergman, the director of BreakingNews tells TVNewser:

“BreakingNews.com’s always-on editorial team scans coverage from news organizations and eyewitnesses to provide a real-time stream of verified updates. In a way, it’s like watching a live TV broadcast — the stream updates dynamically with alerts, tweets, photos and video. We focus on linking only what’s new, moments after it happens, giving credit where credit is due.’
