Letterman Blackmailed: Halderman Lawyer Says Prosecution’s Case ‘Makes Absolutely No Sense’

For the first second time since David Letterman‘s admission last Thursday that he was the target of an extortion plot, we got to hear just a bit of CBS News employee Robert “Joe” Halderman’s side of the case. [Edit: Halderman’s lawyer was on “Geraldo Rivera at Large” last night. He was also on “Good Morning America” this morning.]

This morning, Halderman’s attorney, Gerald Shargel, sat down with NBC’s Ann Curry on the “Today” show and insisted that the prosecution’s case “makes no sense” and that “the public should not rush to judgment.”

Shargel also said, “It’s not only the motive and intent and conduct of Joe Halderman, it’s the motive, intent and conduct of David Letterman as well. As I’ve said, I look forward to cross-examining Letterman.” In the end, the interview turned contentious with Shargel accusing Curry of being impatient and Curry claiming that, despite the media access he’s been given, Shargel has not presented much of his client’s side of the story.
