On Wednesday morning, two members of the U.S. Olympic team appeared on the “Today” show to show off the new Ralph Lauren-designed uniforms to be worn in the Opening Ceremony.
By Wednesday evening, “ABC World News” reported the growing ire about the athletes’ suits being made in China.
Following ABC’s revelation lawmakers say they’re taking action. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) told ABC News, “I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again.” (Considering they’re custom tailored, probably not possible this late in the game, although that would be quite a bonfire).
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), in whose district exists a Hugo Boss manufacturing plant, is calling on the U.S. Olympic Committee to utilize American clothing manufacturers for the 2014 Winter Games in Russia.
And just because they’re made in China doesn’t mean they’re cheap. The Ralph Lauren uniforms run $1,945 for men, and $1,473 for women, including the $55 beret.
Launched in the Spring of 2011, ABC’s “Made in America” series has helped American companies and American-made products that have been featured on the broadcast.
