Lauren Wolfe, a journalist and the director of a group called Women Under Seige writes about how the sexual assault of CBS News’s Lara Logan last February while covering the aftermath of the Egyptian revolution, has inspired more women journalists to come forward to report their own abuses.
Jineth Bedoya, a Colombian journalist who was kidnapped, tortured, and gang-raped 11 years ago while reporting a story on arms trafficking may soon see justice for the crimes against her. The men who attacked her told her to “pay attention” as they tortured her. “We are sending a message to the press in Colombia.”
Logan echoes that sentiment.
“My attack was retribution against the free press in general and the flow of information — it was meant to discredit the revolution,” Logan tells Wolfe. “It had a much bigger purpose to it.”
