ABC News veteran John Green has been named Executive Producer of ABC Newsmagazines. For the past 3 years, Green has been EP of special programming and development at ABC News. Before that he was EP of “Good Morning America” weekend, which he launched in 2004.
In a note to staff, obtained by TVNewser, Newsmag EP David Sloan writes, “[Green] will act as my deputy and will bring his considerable creative energy to 20/20, breaking news specials, summer development, and the increasing number of network one-offs we’ll be asked to do in the coming new year.”
Green’s promotion is the first executive producer move under incoming News president Ben Sherwood.

I am happy to announce that John Green will join the ABC Newsmagazines as an Executive Producer. He will act as my deputy and will bring his considerable creative energy to 20/20, breaking news specials, summer development, and the increasing number of network one-offs we’ll be asked to do in the coming new year. For the past 3 years, John has been EP of special programming and development for the division.
John has a long and distinguished career at ABC News, having helped launch GMA weekend in 2004 and was that program’s first EP. He also developed and launched a weekly environmental magazine, “Focus Earth with Bob Woodruff,” which ran for 2 seasons on Discovery’s Planet Green Network. John also launched and managed ABC News on Campus, our division’s network of university-based digital news bureaus. For John, this was a real labor of love.
I know John to be a wildly creative guy with broad experience in live and taped programming. He has remarkable skills as a journalist, a creator of new programming and as a show-runner. He will enliven the magazines and help us expand into an even greater supplier of innovative content for our own network as well as outside companies too.
