Vice President Joe Biden‘s Rose Garden announcement that he would not be running for president caught some news organizations off guard. “I’ve never seen an event more hastily arranged than this one in the Rose Garden,” said ABC’s White House correspondent Jonathan Karl to ABC’s David Muir, who anchored a network special report at 12:15 p.m. ET.
CBS News’s Jim Axelrod anchored a special report with Major Garrett reporting from the Rose Garden. Garrett was the first to report that the VP was not running. CBS said as much at the top of their report. NBC’s Pete Williams hastily broke in to NBC’s programming for a network-wide special report moment before Biden appeared in the Rose Garden, alongside Dr. Jill Biden and Pres. Obama. Lester Holt was in place at the end of Biden’s remarks which ran 13 minutes. WATCH:
